Manchester City suffer injury scare ahead of Premier League opener against West Ham

Manchester City will be sweating on the fitness of Leroy Sane for their opening Premier League game against West Ham after the German winger went off injured against Liverpool this afternoon (Sunday).

The German started the Community Shield clash at Wembley, despite being heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

But he was substituted early on after a challenge from Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, with Sane landing awkwardly.

The 23-year-old received treatment on the pitch for around one minute, before getting to his feet, but he was unable to continue and was substituted for Gabriel Jesus after just 11 minutes as he hobbled off.

The extent of Sane's injury is not yet known, although City boss Pep Guardiola is likely to be asked for an update on the German after the game.

However, Sane's involvement next week in the opening Premier League fixture against West Ham at the London Stadium could now be in doubt, depending on the extent of the injury.

It could also impact on any potential transfer to Bayern Munich, with the deadline on Thursday (August 8).

Guardiola has spoken of his desire to keep Sane at the Etihad Stadium, amid the speculation over his future, and his involvement from the start in the Community Shield clash suggests that he still has a key role to play for City this season.

Meanwhile, City were also without defender Aymeric Laporte for the game against Liverpool, with the Frenchman missing out with a knock ahead of the Premier League opener next week.
