The line-up also has General Sir Nick Carter, the outgoing chief of the defence staff, anthropologist Dr Jane Goodall and Jacky Wright, Microsoft chief digital officer.

Owenna Griffiths, editor of Today, said: “I’m thrilled these guest editors have agreed to spend some time with us to help illuminate and make sense of the world we live in.”

Previous guest editors have included Prince Harry, Greta Thunberg, Benjamin Zephaniah and Prof Stephen Hawking.

Other festive highlights on radio include Tom Daley making his debut with a show on Radio 2 where there will also be shows fronted by Westlife, Mica Paris and Pet Shop Boys.
