Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan takes aim at Champions League reforms as UEFA plans branded lesser of two evils

Current Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has urged football fans not to give UEFA a free pass now that the European Super League has been defeated.

The planned breakaway between 12 European superclubs was criticised by City boss Pep Guardiola in a press conference before his side were the first to publicly pull out on Tuesday night - and it's clear that many players were also highly sceptical of the project.

But now one of Guardiola's top performers in the Premier League this season insists the planned Champions League reforms from 2024 should also be shot down in the same manner.

The new 'Swiss model' style will expand the competition to 36 teams and lengthen the group stage to 10 games instead of six.

Gundogan reckons it should also be canned, branding the format the "lesser of two evils".

The German internationalist tweeted: "With all the Super League stuff going on... can we please also speak about the new Champions League format?

"More and more and more games, is no one thinking about us players? The new UCL format is just the lesser of the two evils in comparison to the Super League...

"The UCL format right now works great and that is why it's the most popular club competition in the world - for us players and for the fans."
