Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero not sure of starting place against Chelsea

Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero is unsure whether he will be available to start Sunday’s visit of the reigning Premier League champions, Chelsea, to the Etihad Stadium. The Argentinian, a substitute in the 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Monday, said he requires additional time to reach top condition after joining the squad late following the Copa América.

The 27-year-old, who has suffered from knee and hamstring injuries, also warned against taking unnecessary risks before he reaches full fitness. He joined his team-mates three weeks after those not involved in the tournament in Chile.

“Whether I start or not remains to be seen,” Agüero said. “I’m trying to get there and be in top condition but arriving for pre-season later having taken part in the Copa América with Argentina means I need some additional time. With the whole season in mind, what matters the most is that I get in top form and don’t take any risks.”

Agüero also predicted a tight battle for the title and said it would be a mistake to suggest only a two-horse race between City and Chelsea.

“Once again, many teams have made very important additions and that means there’s no single rival for us this season,” Agüero said. “It’d be very naive to think that Chelsea will be the only team competing for the top position – there will be many of us and each one will challenge in their own style.

“We’ll stay hungry for glory, we’ll do our jobs, we’ll win all we possibly can and see where that takes us.”
