Manchester City could be without both Sergio Agüero and David Silva for the Manchester derby, after both players suffered injuries while on international duty.

Agüero looks set to be out for a month after tearing a muscle in his thigh during Argentina’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Ecuador on Thursday, while Silva could miss two or three weeks with an ankle injury, suffered as Spain beat Luxembourg 4-0 on Friday.

City face Bournemouth in their first game after the international break, then play Sevilla in the Champions League before the derby against Manchester United on 25 October. If the current estimates for both men are correct, they will face a race to be fit for the clash at Old Trafford.

“I think I’ll be a month without playing,” Agüero told TyC Sports. “I’ll go to the AFA [Argentinian Football Association] national team compound to carry on with treatment. To recover from the tear I’ll surely need a month, although it will depend how it evolves.”

A statement on the Spanish national team website read: “Silva is out of the squad due to a bad sprain of the internal lateral ligament of the right ankle.”

The two players will both leave their international camps and respectively not play in Tuesday’s match against Paraguay and Spain’s final qualifier against Ukraine.
