Manchester City's move for Harry Maguire likened to Liverpool's transfer of Virgil van Dijk

Manchester City have been linked with a big-money move for Leicester City's star defender Harry Maguire.

And a former team-mate of the England international has claimed if Pep Guardiola's side pull off the signing it will be similar to when Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk.

Vicente Iborra, who spent a one-and-a-half seasons playing alongside Maguire at the King Power, has made the bold comparison between the PFA Players' Player of the Year and Foxes centre-back Maguire.

The former Sevilla midfielder believes if the Premier League champions do sign the centre-half, he could have the same impact as when the Reds signed Van Dijk in 2018.

Iborra made the claim on Radio Marca, as cited by Goal, saying: "He is a great player. He’s very powerful, with good balance, great at bringing the ball out and he can score goals.

"He had a great World Cup and is a super footballer.

"His transfer to Manchester City could be like Van Dijk’s to Liverpool."

Van Dijk transformed Liverpool's defence after his record-breaking £75m arrival from Southampton, helping the Reds to the best defensive record in the Premier League last season.

Back-to-back Champions League final appearances have marked the Dutchman out as one of the world's very best defenders.

The Holland captain is one of the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or after the Reds' Champions League success.

Following Vincent Kompany's departure Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen to add some experience to his back line.

It has also been rumoured that City's rivals Manchester United are also interested in signing the 26-year-old.
