Manchester City player self isolating after relative tested for coronavirus

A member of Manchester City’s first team squad is self isolating after a family member fell ill and was taken to hospital.

The member of Pep Guardiola’s side is taking the precaution until it is known whether his relative is suffering from coronavirus.

According to Manchester Evening News , the footballer's relative fell ill earlier on Thursday and was taken to hospital after suffering with symptoms consistent with the illness.

They remain in hospital and have undergone tests, including one for the Covid-19 virus.

As a result the player in question has been told to self isolate until the result of the test is confirmed.

A Manchester City spokesman said: "The club is aware that a family member of a senior men’s team player is in hospital with symptoms of a respiratory illness.

"He has undergone tests at hospital one of which is for Covid-19.

"Until the results are known, the player in question is self isolating as a precaution.”

City saw their Premier League clash with Arsenal postponed on Wednesday night after the Gunners players had come into contact with Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who has tested positive for the virus.

While their Champions League last-16 second leg tie with Real Madrid, scheduled for next Tuesday, has also been called off, with the Spanish giants squad in quarantine after a player in Real's basketball squad, who share facilities with the football club, was diagnosed with coronavirus.

But their game with Burnley this weekend is set to go ahead as planned after the Premier League confirmed on Thursday night that all games will be played.

Everton host Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby on Monday night. A win could leave Jurgen Klopp's side three points away from clinching the title.
