Manchester City or Liverpool set to take Premier League record away from Manchester United

In terms of pure quality, this season's title race arguably stands alone since the Premier League's inception in 1992.

Manchester City and Liverpool have consistently set the standard for the rest of the division to follow and, while cases can be made for there being more dramatic and incident-ridden duels, no two sides have played quite this well in the same campaign.

World famous data analyst gives Premier League prediction - where Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea finish

One statistic that supports that is the raw points total each team has amassed, as whoever emerges as champion on May 12, the runners-up are likely to have set a new record as a second-placed team.

Liverpool currently stand one point behind City on 88, which is only a draw shy of the all-time Premier League mark set by Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United in 2011/12 who finished second to Manchester City by virtue of goal difference.

With the Reds remanining fixtures against Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves, it's inconceivable that they won't collect at least a point from those matches, while City face Burnley, Leicester and Watford.

Both teams are already exceeding the +56 goal difference United collected in 2011/12 and Liverpool are only a goal scored behind Tottenham's highest for a second-placed team of +60.

Below are the leading runners-up in Premier League history, plus Liverpool's current record.

Manchester United (2011/12) +56 89
Liverpool (2018/19) +59 88*
