Ederson brands Tommy Robinson a 'liar' and distances himself from EDL founder after being pictured together

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes has distanced himself from Tommy Robinson after a picture of them together was shared online.

An image of the pair together was posted on social media alongside the claim that Mr Robinson had the player's "full support while in Manchester".

But Ederson, who also plays for the Brazlian national team, has since said he had "no idea" who Mr Robinson was.

He wrote on Twitter: "People have made me aware of who this guy is. I definitely not support this guy or his ideas. He just stopped me for a picture. I had no idea who he was."

The Man City star ended the tweet, which shared the image of him with Mr Robinson, with "do not be a liar".

Many had been sceptical even prior to Ederson's tweet and said they thought it was unlikely he was aware of Mr Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Robinson has announced he will stand in the forthcoming European elections. (PA)

Ederson, 25, is Manchester City's first-choice goalkeeper, having signed for the club in 2017 for a reported transfer fee of £35million.

Mr Robinson has recently hit headlines after he announced he is running as an independent MEP candidate.

He was also recently ordered to stop handing out free burgers and hot dogs to supporters at a rally because it broke electoral law.
