Manchester City hero Yaya Toure questions Pep Guardiola over Champions League failure

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has called the club’s failure to win the Champions League “disappointing” and questioned whether Pep Guardiola may have to consider his future if it continues.

City were knocked out of the competition at the quarter-final stage thanks to surprise defeat to French side Lyon last week.

It means Guardiola has failed to get beyond the last eight in each of his four seasons in charge, with the club’s best ever European showing coming in reaching the 2015/16 semi-finals under Manuel Pellegrini.

The Spaniard won the competition twice in the early part of his managerial career, at Barcelona, but also failed to deliver the trophy during his time at Bayern Munich.

“The manager has been signed for that, just to bring this trophy and when you see Liverpool maybe and other clubs who [have won it] without doing a lot of work in the transfer market, it's quite strange and disappointing,” he said on Football Daily.

“Of course, he's been brought to the club to get a massive trophy for them and at the moment it's not been delivered in the way they want.

“Everybody knows Pep is a great manager, but at the moment, when things aren’t going their way, sometimes is it time maybe to change? I don’t know, we will see.”
