Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson makes Philippe Coutinho claim after Bayern Munich transfer

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson believes the summer signing of Philippe Coutinho instantly makes Bayern Munich one of the favourites for the Champions League .

Pep Guardiola 's former club haven't lifted the trophy since 2013 and have undergone a transition period following the departures of iconic wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

The Bavarians were desperate to sign Man City 's Leroy Sane over the summer to replace their star men, but City were able to keep the German after he required surgery to fix an ACL problem picked up against Liverpool.

Instead, Bayern opted to sign Coutinho on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with reports suggesting that Guardiola rejected the chance to bring the Brazilian to the Etihad in the wake of Sane's injury.

Ederson is backing his countryman to succeed in the Bundesliga and thinks his arrival means Bayern will be one of City's main rivals in the Champions League.

"Bayern is always a great team. Now with Coutinho they definitely belong among the title favourites for the Champions League," he told Bild .

"Coutinho is a brilliant player. Unfortunately, it did not go as well for him in Barcelona as it was in Liverpool.

"At Bayern he can now show his football again and be really happy again."

Bayern will face Red Star Belgrade, Olympiacos and Tottenham Hotspur in Group B while City meet Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta in Group C.
