Manchester City get Sergio Aguero injury boost ahead of Oxford United clash in Carabao Cup

Sergio Aguero returned to Manchester City training ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Striker Aguero has not featured since being replaced in the 2-1 win over Chelsea almost a month ago. Gabriel Jesus has started each of the six fixtures since.

Manager Pep Guardiola had previously given updates on Aguero's muscle injury, telling reporters before the win at Arsenal that the Argentine was still absent from training.

Now, Aguero was pictured joining in with his teammates in a training session at the CFA before City's Carabao Cup trip to Oxford.

Jesus has performed well in Aguero's absence, scoring five goals in six appearances, but Guardiola would prefer the option to rotate in attack as the hectic Christmas schedule approaches - with six games in 18 days

After taking on Oxford on Wednesday, City face a crucial home fixture with Leicester on Saturday before a tricky trip to Wolves on December 27.

Less than 48 hours after is a home clash with Sheffield United followed by a New Year's Day clash with Everton and FA Cup tie with Port Vale on January 4.

Aguero's return - even if he may not be fully match fit for the trip to Oxford - is a boost to Pep Guardiola, who has also seen Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane step up their recoveries from long-term injury in the last week.

Laporte and Sane join John Stones and David Silva as the only players on the shortening injury list.
