Here are the latest Manchester City evening headlines for Tuesday, August 25.
UEFA president reacts to Man City CAS defeat and offers appeal update
UEFA will consider appealing the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to clear Manchester City last month, according to president Aleksander Ceferin.
Initially, City faced a stern punishment that included a fine and a ban from the Champions League after UEFA deemed they had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations.
The club subsequently appealed, took their case to CAS, where their ban was overturned. It was seen as a significant victory for the club, but Ceferin admitted that while UEFA respected the judgement, they were unhappy with the outcome.
“Nobody wants to lose a case,” Ceferin told the Associated Press.
“We were not happy with the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. But we have to respect the decision of the body that we agreed is the last instance in our decision-making process.
UEFA can still seek an appeal via the Swiss federal court, but it would be an expensive operation. That said, Ceferin did not rule out the idea when asked, replying: “I don’t want to enter that.”
RB Leipzig provide update on Angelino’s future
RB Leipzig remain interested in Manchester City defender Angelino and will seek to secure a permanent transfer for the defender.
The Spaniard returned to Man City last summer after a fine spell in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven. Unfortunately, he struggled to cement a place in the first-team and was subsequently loaned out to RB Leipzig in January.
He has found form under Julian Nagelsmann, however, and it is believed the German club are keen to extend his stay, although they face competition from Barcelona.
Leipzig had the option to purchase Angelino for £27million as part of the loan agreement, but the impact of the coronavirus has complicated matters. City will be seeking a fee in that region, with sporting director Markus Krosche hopeful they can reach a compromise.
He told Kicker (via Tribal Football ): “We are closer to finding a solution with Manchester City than with AS Roma (for fellow loanee Patrik Schick).”
Gareth Southgate gives England challenge to Phil Foden after debut call-up
Gareth Southgate has challenged Phil Foden to break into England’s Euro 2021 squad after rewarding him with his first senior call-up.
Foden, 20, has shown flickers of his ability for Manchester City this season and following David Silva’s departure to Real Sociedad he is tipped to have a big season under Pep Guardiola. He has now celebrated his first senior call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad, and the England manager has identified Foden as one of several players with an opportunity to cement their place.
He told England’s in-house media: “Obviously they’ve been involved with England in the junior teams so for them they’re used to coming here, used to being part of an England team. This is a step up for them but they’re both more than capable.
“We’re a year away from the European Championship, let’s see if they can start to break into that team, that squad. And it gives us great competition for places, they’re realistic challengers.”
