Manchester City confirm stance on Bayern Munich defender David Alaba

Manchester City are not interested in making a move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.

The 28-year-old star has alerted a number of top European clubs after a planned contract renewal with the Bundesliga champions turned sour. Bayern have been very vocal with their displeasure at the failure to reach an agreement - to the dismay of the player - and in November withdrew their offer to leave Alaba free to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Pep Guardiola enjoyed great success with Alaba at Bayern and the two had an excellent working relationship, and with ongoing questions over the left-back role at the Etihad it was easy to link the two. However, City are not expected to make a move for the versatile defender either in the remaining days of the January transfer window or in summer.

Aleks Zinchenko has started four of the last five Premier League games for the Blues in a position that he is making his own again, while Joao Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte are also viable options; there is also Benjamin Mendy, who the club continued to show faith in this season when deciding on their plans in the transfer market.

Real Madrid appear to be in pole position to snap up Austrian international Alaba, although Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with a move.

City's priority for the summer transfer window remains a striker, having focused on defence last year and midfield the year before that.
