Manchester City are close to agreeing a deal under which Stevan Jovetic will join Internazionale permanently next summer for €15m (£10.5m) after spending the 2015-16 season on loan at the Serie A club.

The Montenegrin has failed to cement a place in Manuel Pellegrini’s starting XI since joining City in a deal worth £22m in the summer of 2013. He has made only 30 league appearances in two seasons, scoring eight goals, and is the only player, along with Edin Dzeko, who has yet to feature on City’s summer tour after two games.

He was not included in City’s Champions League squad for the knockout phase after the signing of Wilfried Bony in the January window and it always looked likely he would leave the club in the summer.

A huge success at Fiorentina before moving to England, the 25-year-old scored 35 times in 116 league games and played in the Champions League in 2009-10 as Cesare Prandelli’s team beat Liverpool home and away in the group stage.

Roma are interested in signing Dzeko but the two clubs have so far failed to agree a deal for the 29-year-old.
