Manchester city centre's King Street described as 'iconic but declining' by newcomer who promises 'much needed boost' to shoppers

An empty shop unit in Manchester has been turned into a market place for independent brands.

The Pop-Up Club launched last weekend on what' they've described as the 'iconic but declining' King Street in the city centre.

The pop-up events company was founded in 2017, creating new marketplaces inside empty retail units, but this is the first time it has ventured to Manchester.

They say they will give the area - and local businesses - a 'much-needed boost'.

In 2020, the company made more than £140,000 for its traders through markets and temporary shops.

It's hoped that it will provide a platform for independent brands - including those created as 'side hustles' in lockdown - and give shoppers a fun retail experience.

It's taken shape at 19 King Street, once home to a branch of Jigsaw but now one of a number of vacant retail spaces in the region.

Organisers said: "One of Manchester’s most iconic shopping districts, the area was once known for its beautiful historic architecture and world famous brands for every style, taste and budget.

"In recent years Manchester locals have seen the decline of the area with many empty retail units appearing as online shopping, rising rent rates and the effects of lockdown takes its toll on this once prestigious high street retail destination."

Local businesses taking part will include The Neighbourhood Threat (homewares), The Red Spotty Dog (handmade statement jewellery), Timia Boutique (handcrafted silver jewellery) and Nicola Briggs Ceramics.

Founder Tillie Peel says they've had an 'incredible reaction' (Supplied)

Tillie Peel, founder of The Pop-Up Club said: "We couldn’t be more excited to host our first ever Pop-Up in Manchester.

"As a city famous for its shopping we are pleased to bring a host of fantastic independent brands to one of Manchester’s most famous retail destinations.

"Like many high streets across the UK, King Street has suffered in recent years.

"Now more than ever there’s a need to attract shoppers back to the high street and the reaction to our first pop-up in Manchester has been incredible.

"For people who have been stuck at home for many months, the opportunity to get out and experience a taste of pre-pandemic life with something as simple as an afternoon shopping will also provide a much-needed boost to those who have previously struggled with lockdown anxiety.

"At The Pop-Up Club we are offering an exciting shopping experience, where visitors can support local traders and browse beautiful, original items not found elsewhere."
