Manchester city centre's huge new Nightingale hospital is treating its first patients - pictures

Medics at Manchester city centre's huge new Nightingale Hospital are already treating their first patients ahead of the official opening on Friday.

Pictures from the site show at least one patient being assessed in the centre - with other medics taking part in training exercises.

The field hospital, at Manchester Central Convention Complex, was built in just two weeks and will have capacity to treat 750 people.

On Easter Monday, bosses at the facility announced they were ready to admit patients.

Two huge BOC oxygen towers have been erected outside the venue which will supply oxygen for 648 beds.

Photos from the hospital show doctors in face shields and aprons assisting the patient in Ward 7.

Further pictures show clinicians in a role-play scenario tending to a cardiac arrest patient - played by a ward nurse - in the dedicated resuscitation room.

Clinicians are then seen running through the centre during the training exercise.

Further images show the doctors and nurses holding a debrief following the role-play.

Another photo shows a soldier from the 1st Battalion the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment helping to unpack scrubs.

The soldiers have now left the hospital for the last time after helping in the construction of the facility.

The field hospital will officially open on Friday after NHS leaders, contractors and the armed forces worked tirelessly to transform the former G-MEX centre in just a fortnight.

The hospital will have capacity to treat scores of patients from across the North West.

The majority of patients will be those in the process of being 'stepped-down' from ICU and critical care beds at neighbouring hospitals.

Earlier this week, the hospital's CEO Michael McCourt, tweeted: "1st tweet as CEO NHS Nightingale North West.

"Proud and thankful to be able to say we take our first patients today.

"In 14 days huge NHS, Army & NHS partner effort this hospital is open.

"A lot of attention on us but don’t want to forget we are here to support an already busy NW NHS."
