Manchester city centre restaurant closes after positive Covid-19 case

Another Manchester city centre restaurant has been forced to close after a team member tested positive for coronavirus.

Kala Bistro on King Street will close its doors "until next week" with bosses saying they hope the impact "will be limited".

Kala, which opened in 2018, is the sixth instalment to the Elite Bistros portfolio after Sticky Walnut, Burnt Truffle, Hispi, Wreckfish and Pinion.

Those with bookings affected by the closure will be contacted today, Kala said.

The Elite Bistros team posted a statement to Kala's social media pages, which reads: "We’re so sorry to let you know we will be closing Kala from today until next week after a case of Covid-19 was reported amongst our team.

"Our track and trace processes have been activated and we’re hopeful that our stringent adherence to the protocols means that the impact will be limited.

"If you’ve got a reservation with us you’ll be contacted by one of the team today.

"We are so sorry and we will do our best to rebook anybody who’s reservation we need to cancel."

It comes after some of the city centre's most popular restaurants and bars had to temporarily close over the bank holiday weekend due to positive Covid-19 cases.

The Northern Quarter's Common, Erst and The Jane Eyre in Ancoats, Hawksmoor on Deansgate, Bar Pop on Canal Street, and the new Schofield's cocktail bar on Little Quay Street all confirmed their temporary closures on social media last week.

Bosses at the businesses said they had been faced with 'difficult decisions' to make, after a challenging year for hospitality.

Kala's closure comes after Elite Bistros owner Manchester chef Gary Usher smashed his latest crowdfunding target by raising £150,000 in around 23 hours.

The Kickstarter campaigner will help fund a dedicated site for the Elite Bistros at Home offering, as well outside catering for weddings and events.

Gary posted an emotional message after hitting his target, thanking backers for 'securing the future' of Elite Bistros after a 'terrible' period.

He wrote: "Its been a terrible 18 months but in our darkest times the team started @Elite_Bistros AT HOME, as I personally gave up all hope.

"I looked at folding Elite. Everyone disagreed & the teams running it turned @Elite_Bistros around.

"Today you just secured its/our future. Thank you X."
