Manchester city centre nightclub forced to shut early after 'hostile' crowd turn on police

A nightclub had to close early when police were faced with ‘increasing hostility’ during an early hours ‘disturbance’.

Tribeca made the ‘voluntary decision’ to close after the incident outside the nightclub at around 12.20am this morning (January 2).

Officers were called to Sackville Street, on the edge of Manchester’s Gay Village, and attempted to disperse a ‘large crowd’ gathered on the street.

However they were met with ‘increasing hostility’, Greater Manchester Police said.

Officers then used ‘proportionate force’ to disperse the crowd quickly, the force said in a statement.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested to prevent a breach of the peace.

A photograph taken at around 1.30am shows a large police presence in the area.

While a video, shared with the Manchester Evening News , appears to show several people gathered on Sackville Street along with police officers.

GMP has launched an investigation to identify those involved in the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At around 12.20am this morning (Sunday 2 January 2022), police were called to reports of a disturbance outside of a nightclub on Sackville Street, Manchester.

“Officers attended and attempted to disperse a large crowd which was gathered.

“Due to increasing hostility, officers used proportionate force to disperse the crowd quickly and maintain the safety of all involved.

“The crowd dispersed and following consultation the nightclub made a voluntary decision to close the venue.

“A 20-year-old man was arrested to prevent a breach of the peace.

“The investigation is ongoing to establish the full facts and identify those involved.”
