Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor on the key player who is thriving in her new role

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor was full of praise for midfielder Georgia Stanway after her starring role in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the Barclay’s Women’s Super League.

England international Stanway opened the scoring inside four minutes with a deflected right-footed strike and Vicky Losada made it 2-0 before half-time.

Stanway struck again in the second half, with her second goal of the match 15 minutes from time sealing all three points for Taylor’s side, who are now closing in on the Champions League places after a slow start to the campaign.

Stanway has now scored in five games in a row and Taylor was full of praise for her and the overall team performance.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted with her. She’s been great in taking on and accepting the challenge of taking on a slightly different position.

“She’s affecting the game no matter what position she’s playing in. She’s really affecting the play in the right manner and she’s in a good place at the moment.

“It was a good and professional performance. We managed the game well. We had to deal with a high press from Villa, which is something we didn’t think we would encounter, the girls dealt with that really well.

“We potentially could have got more goals with the opportunities that we created but we have to be pleased.”

Taylor was also delighted that the side had a significant advantage after 45 minutes, having been slow to get going in last weekend’s ultimately dominant 6-0 win at Brighton.

“It helps,” he said. “We were 0-0 at half-time against Brighton and away at Leicester in the week we obviously clicked really early with three goals in the first half.

“It was pleasing to come in at half-time 2-0 up and then be able to make a couple of subs in the second half.”
