Manchester City and Manchester United handed a boost in their pursuit of Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester City and Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt.

Both clubs have been continually linked with the defender in recent weeks, and have now appeared to receive a boost to their chances of claiming the 19-year-old's signature this summer.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that despite having also been linked with the centre-back, Liverpool are in fact not trying to secure the services of De Ligt this summer.

They believe Jurgen Klopp is happy with his centre-back options and isn't looking to strengthen his squad in that department.

This news could come as a relief for both City and United who are expected to be in the market for reinforcements in this summer's window.

City will be looking to replace their long-serving captain Vincent Kompany, who confirmed he is leaving the Blues on Sunday morning to become the new player-manager of R.S.C. Anderlecht.

The move will bring an end to Kompany's 11-year association with City and will leave a huge hole in their back-four.

While United are in desperate need of a squad overhaul following a miserable Premier League campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side finished sixth and as a result missed out on Champions League football next season.

And the Norwegian has spoken at length recently about the need for fresh blood at the club, and De Ligt, who was one of the stand out stars of his side's run to the last four of the Champions League, fits United's bill of being young and an emerging talent.

De Ligt is expected to leave the Dutch giants this summer with Ajax CEO Edwin Van der Sar confirming in March he expects his side's captain to head to either England or Spain.

"I think these will be De Ligt’s final games with Ajax," the former United keeper told Sky Italia.

"But I hope he goes out on a high. He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club. I think he’ll go to England or Spain."
