Manchester bomb victim’s mum says 'maternal instinct' told her son was dead hour after attack

The mother of a young man who lost his life in the Manchester bombing attack has said she knew her son was dead due to a "maternal instinct".

Coronation Street super fan Martyn Hett was one of 22 people to die in the terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in May 2017.

His mother, Figen Murray, appeared on Thursday's Loose Women via video link to discuss how she likes to remember her son and also what happened on the tragic night.

Panelist Jane Moore asked: "How did you find out that something had happened?" to which Figen admitted that she didn't know her son was at the concert.

"Well actually I didn’t know he was at the concert. I thought he was at home getting ready for his trip to America which he was supposed to go on on the 24th and I went to bed early that night," she explained.

"It was one of my daughter’s who woke me up because his friends were texting him because they were at the concert with him and couldn’t find him and they were wondering whether he had contacted us, and of course that wasn’t the case unfortunately."

Jane then commented: "I just can’t even imagine what that was like for you," before asking when Figen had actually found out that Martyn had died.

"I kind of knew about less than hour after the attack that he died because it was just maternal instinct," she told the panel.

"I just suddenly had this strong feeling that he’s just not even on the planet anymore. There was just complete silence, I couldn’t feel him anymore. But officially we were actually told the day after then we went to the stadium.

"And that evening about 24 hours after we were told that he was one of the people that had passed away," she added.

Viewers tuning in at home took to Twitter to comment and praised Figen for being so "brave".

"Truly heartbreaking hearing Martyn Hett’s mum speak about the moment she knew he died. Maternal instinct. So very very sad #loosewomen," one person posted.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
