Manchester bomber's brother 'refuses to take part in deradicalisation programme' in jail

The brother of the Manchester Arena terror bomber is refusing to take part in deradicalisation programmes in a max security prison, it is reported.

Mass murderer Hashem Abedi, 24, was jailed in 2020 for a minimum of 55 years before parole for his part in the bomb plot.

He is being held at HMP Frankland in a special "prison within a prison", which is reserved for the most radical terrorists, amid fears he could radicalise other inmates, ITV News reports.

Journalist Paul Brand, who visited the prison, said he watched on CCTV as an inmate believed to be Abedi spoke to another prisoner thought to be a former Taliban fighter jailed for plotting terror attacks in the UK.

His brother Salman Abedi, 22, detonated a home-made shrapnel-packed bomb at the end of an Ariana Grande concert on May 22 2017, killing 22 bystanders and injuring hundreds more.

In December, a public inquiry heard Hashem had admitted for the first time his involvement in planning the bombing.

On October 22 last year, Hashem was interviewed in prison, where he admitted he played “a full and knowing part”, the inquiry was told.

The Abedi brothers, from Fallowfield in south Manchester, spent months ordering, stockpiling and transporting the deadly materials for the terror attack, using multiple mobile phones, addresses and runaround vehicles to make their bomb.

They joined their parents in Libya the month before the blast, but Salman returned to the UK on May 18.

He bought the final components needed for the bomb, rented a flat in the city centre in which to build it and carried out reconnaissance on the Arena before finally executing the plot as fans departed from an Ariana Grande concert.

ITV News reports that Hashem is refusing to co-operate with a deradicalisation programme at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

He is being held at a Separation Centre away from other inmates amid fears he could radicalise other prisoners.

Hashem is one of five prisoners who currently occupy the "prison within a prison".

All but one of the five have refused to take part in deradicalisation programmes, it was reported.

ITV News said its cameras recorded the voices of inmates in the Separation Centre shouting to each other through open windows.

The prisoners spoke in Arabic and discussed things such as listening to the radio and taking naps.

Inmates are able to socialise with each other outside their cells.

There is a work-out space, kitchen, laundry room and a shower room.

Each cell has a bed, toilet, sink, table and chair.

Richard Vipond, Probation Officer and Prison Offender Manager at HMP Frankland, told ITV News that some prisoners are "entrenched" in their views and refused to participate in deradicalisation programmes.

He said: "One particular person I was working with, we opened his cell door and he said 'I’m not going talk to you, you’re an enemy of Islam, you’re an Islamophobe, you're my enemy'."

Other convicted terrorists at HMP Frankland include Labour MP Jo Cox's killer Thomas Mair and Parsons Green bomber Ahmed Hassan.

Notorious murderers including Levi Bellfield are also held there.

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe was an inmate until his death.
