Manchester Airport's passenger lounge rated joint best in country by Which?

A passenger lounge at Manchester Airport has been rated joint best in the country by consumer group Which?

With comfortable seating and champagne on tap, undercover inspectors said the 1903 lounge offers the true 'VIP experience'.

The pay-as-you-go lounge at Terminal 3 shared the top spot with two of Heathrow’s airport lounges – No1 and The House.

The 1903 lounge was described as 'comfortable', with a 'good selection of wines accompanied by tasting notes'.

It also has 'cheese plates courtesy of the world's oldest cheddar makers', the Which? website says.

1903 is an adults only airport lounge and costs £35 per person to pre-book.

1903 offers an unlimited hot and cold buffet (shared content unit)

There are two 1903 lounges at the airport, based in Terminal 1 and 3.

They offer all-inclusive food, snacks, drinks and wifi, and has clear runway views.

The bars stock free wine, prosecco, beers and spirits.

All guests get a free FastTrack pass which saves time on queuing at security.

Groups larger than four are not permitted.

Inspectors visited 21 pay-as-you-go lounges at some of the biggest airports in the UK.

Despite quality offerings at 1903, there were plenty of airport lounges at the other end of the scale, inspectors found.

'Paying for an airport lounge is a gamble', according to the website.

"In contrast to the bottomless champagne and gourmet made-to-order dishes, we also found cheap glasses of wine and tired, unappetising buffets", the website says.

Southend Airport's was voted worst airport lounge, with a rating of one out of five.

Not all airport lounges were as comfortable as 1903 (menn)

They described the lounge as having 'uncomfortable lurid yellow sofas and stained carpets with a dusting of crumbs.'

Newspapers were 'dog-eared' and there was no separate wifi.

"The breakfast also failed to meet expectations, with unripe bananas and pastries cut into halves. At least the website concedes that its buffet ‘in no way constitutes a full meal’", the website says.
