Manchester Airport closes temporarily with a number of flights diverted

Manchester Airport was closed for around an hour this evening (September 12) with a number of flights diverted.

On the live arrivals section of the airport's website, there is no information about the status of scheduled flights, with customers instead directed to their airline.

A number of arrivals were diverted away from Manchester towards London Heathrow and the East Midlands, while some passengers were reportedly told that their flights from Manchester could not take off.

According to reports, the reason for the closure was down to a lack of firefighter cover.

Flight tracking website FlightAware showed a number of flights circling the area, before making their final approach.

The airport reopened just before 10pm.

It comes after a difficult year for Manchester Airport due to the pandemic, with extra Covid-secure measures now in place.

Passengers have recently complained at waiting as long as two hours to get through Passport Control and last week an elderly passenger fainted, while stuck in a huge queue.

The Manchester Evening News has approached Manchester Airport for comment.
