The runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were closed this morning due to heavy snow and flights were cancelled.
Manchester Airport said one of its runways repoened at about 11am but advised passengers to check the status of their flights before setting off.
A spokesman said staff had worked through the night to keep the runways clear but conditions got worse this morning.
Two outbound flights were cancelled as were more than 25 short haul flights due to land at the airport.
Liverpool Airport said at 10.40am that its runway had reopened but flights were still subject to delays.
Images posted on social media showed both airports blanketed in snow.
A Manchester Airport spokesman said earlier: “Our airfield team has been working through the night to keep the runways clear, which resulted in the day’s operations starting as planned.
“However, as conditions worsened significantly this morning, we took the decision to temporarily close our runways.
“We continue to work to mitigate the challenging conditions and hope to minimise further impacts. However, the safety of our customers and staff is our number one concern and there is likely to be some disruption this morning.
“Customers are advised to check the status of their flights with their airlines and allow extra time for journeys to the airport to ensure they arrive safely.
“We further provide further updates as soon as possible.”
It comes amid a yellow weather alert for snow and ice spanning almost all of the UK, with "significant snowfall" forecast across the country.
