CLEVELAND _ Chicago White Sox manager Rick Renteria returned to the dugout Tuesday in the team's 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Progressive Field.
Renteria was sidelined Monday after waking in the morning with a slight cough and nasal congestion. After consulting with team doctors, he underwent precautionary testing at a Cleveland hospital. He was not with the team before Monday night's game against the Indians was postponed because of rain.
The rainout led to Tuesday's twin bill.
Sox starter Dylan Cease lasted just 2 1/3 innings in Game 1. He allowed four runs on seven hits and had one strikeout in his first outing of the season.
Cease surrendered a two-run home run to Francisco Lindor in the first inning and a solo home run to Bradley Zimmer in the second. Cease exited with the bases loaded and one out in the third.
Three of the first four Sox starters have failed to pitch four innings. Lucas Giolito lasted 3 2/3 innings on opening day. He allowed seven runs on six hits, including two home runs. Reynaldo Lopez exited Sunday's start after two-thirds of an inning because of right shoulder tightness after allowing four runs on three hits. The four runs came on a grand slam.
Only Dallas Keuchel, who went 5 1/3 innings Saturday, found a rhythm and avoided giving up a home run.
Cease couldn't duplicate that success.
Sox shortstop Tim Anderson hit his first home run of the season in the third inning. He went 3-for-5 with the home run and two doubles, and scored all three Sox runs. The Sox had 11 hits but stranded 11 runners.
Left fielder Eloy Jimenez was not in the lineup for Game 1. He left Sunday's game against the Minnesota Twins in the second inning after crashing into the left-field wall trying to make a catch. Sox bench coach Joe McEwing said Jimenez is day to day.
The team also announced that right fielder Nomar Mazara has reported to the Schaumburg training facility. He has been on the injured list for unspecified reasons since July 22.
