Man working with heavy machinery dies at Collie coal mine

The man was killed at Griffin Coal's mine near Collie.

A man has been killed in a workplace accident on a mine site near the town of Collie, in WA's South West.

The man in his 40s suffered fatal injuries while working with heavy machinery at Griffin Coal's Ewington mine around 11:00pm on Thursday.

His was taken to Collie Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Department of Mines spokesman said an officer from Collie visited the site early this morning, but safety inspectors from Perth were travelling to the scene to prepare the official report.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

A dozen workplace deaths in a year

The death coincides with International Workers' Memorial Day which is designed to remember those who lost their life while on the job.

10 people have died in workplace accidents in WA over the past year. In addition there have been two deaths in the past week which remain under investigation.

Unions WA Secretary Meredith Hammat said the death overnight put the spotlight on the need for tighter workplace safety.

"… [It] really draws into stark focus the need to be vigilant about workplace safety all the time and make sure we're doing everything we can to reduce workplace deaths and injury in Western Australia," she said.
