Man, woman dead in apparent murder-suicide shooting on South Side

March 09--A man shot his girlfriend to death, then turned the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

Authorities were conducting a well-being check in the 6500 block of South Kimbark Avenue around 6:33 p.m. Sunday when they discovered the woman and the man, both shot to death, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the woman as Linda Soto, 25, and the man as Steven Griffin, 23, both of the 6500 block of South Kimbark. After an autopsy the medical examiner determined that Soto died of multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide and that Griffin had died of a gunshot wound of the mouth in a suicide.

The woman was shot about 10 times, and the man suffered one gunshot wound to his mouth, according to a police report. Police recovered a .45-caliber handgun, 11 shell casings and one fired bullet, according to the report.

The man's father, who had asked for the well-being check, told police he last talked to his son over the phone around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the police report.

He said his son appeared upset and told him that his girlfriend was having a relationship with her child's father, the report said. At the time of the shooting, the child was with his father, who lives in west suburban Berwyn, according to the report.

The Berwyn man told police he has been in a relationship with the 25-year-old woman for the past eight years. He said he knew she had previously dated the other man about a year ago but was not aware she was still seeing him, according to the report.
