Man, woman dead after overnight Hunter crashes

TWO people have died after separate crashes overnight in Lake Macquarie and Forster.

Forster bridge was expected to stay shut into Friday morning after a car fire following a crash claimed the life of a man on Thursday evening, while authorities are investigating the death of a woman at Cameron Park.

Police were called to the Manning Street Forster Tuncurrry bridge about 9.10pm after reports a vehicle was on fire following a three-car collision.

Two off-duty police officers attempted to help after the Holden Statesman caught fire after a crash that also involved a Nissan Navara and Mazda hatchback.

The officers were unable to save the Holden driver, who died at the scene.

They were treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics before they were taken to Manning Base Hospital as a precaution.

Police said on Friday the man was yet to be formally identified.

The Nissan driver, a 48-year-old man and Mazda driver, a 41-year-old man, were both taken for mandatory blood and urine testing at Manning Base Hospital.

Separately, police were called to the M1 Motorway near Newcastle Link Road at Cameron Park in Lake Macquarie about 9pm on Thursday after reports a pedestrian was struck by a truck.

Witnesses rushed to help the woman and perform CPR but police confirmed she died at the scene.

Police said she is yet to be formally identified and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

A crime scene was established and forensically examined as the truck driver, 23, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner over both incidents.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
