Man woken by 'popping noises' looks out window to see fireball

A man today shared shocking pictures of a car engulfed in flames just yards from his house after "popping noises" from the suspected arson attack woke him up.

Fire officials said the car which was reduced to a fire ball was so badly burned that fire-fighters at the scene of the blaze in Kirkby could not be sure what type of vehicle it was.

And the blaze on Tower Hill fields was so ferocious that it woke up Vinicuz Vaz who lives on neighbouring Mossborough Drive.

Photographs from the 35-year-old legal assistant show the car dwarfed by huge flames and the charred remains from the fire which broke out around 1am this morning.

Shocked locals suspect the car was deliberately torched and Mr Vaz said the fire woke him up.

"It must have been around 1.20am. I was in bed and I heard the popping of the tyres and I opened my blinds and saw the car on fire.

"My wife phoned the police and fire. It was huge, unreal."

Asked if he thought the car was deliberately set on fire he added: "I think so. The car was abandoned in the middle of the fields."

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said they sent one engine just before 1am and left the scene by 1.26am.

He added: "The fire was so bad that the firefighters didn't know what type of car it was."

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed officers attended after reports a people carrier was on fire and "explosion noises" were coming from the vehicle, believed to a KIA Sorento.

Police said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
