Man woke to find burglar standing in his bedroom holding his laptop

A man in a city centre apartment woke to find a suspected burglar in his bedroom.

Officers from Merseyside Police confirmed they arrested a man in the early hours of today, Wednesday June 8 following reports of a burglary at a Liverpool City Centre apartment last month. It was reported a man woke to find another man in the bedroom of a property on Wolstenholme Square at around 5.15am.

Following a fight between the two men the suspected burglar dropped a laptop he had tried to take but made off on foot with a wallet. A man was identified on CCTV using cards contained in the wallet and at 2am today officers on patrol on Roscoe Street in the city centre detained him.

A 51-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of burglary with intent to steal, and possession of class A and B drugs (cocaine and cannabis). He has now been taken into custody to be questioned.

Detective Inspector Tony O'Brien said: “Offenders who burgle people’s homes violate the very place we all have every right to feel safe and secure. To target someone in their home in this way is utterly despicable and can have a massive psychological impact on victims, as well as causing damage and loss of property which can have huge sentimental importance to the victim.

"That is why we launched Operation Castle in 2018, our dedicated operation to reducing the number of burglaries in Merseyside and bringing offenders to justice. So far offenders have been sentenced to a total of more than 500 years in prison and we have seen burglary offences in Merseyside decrease year on year.

"We want to keep preventing burglaries from taking place and putting offenders before the courts, so keep reporting any suspicious activity in your area and we will take action.”
