Man without gun licence accidentally shoots himself in genitals

Man was not licensed to carry handgun ( Rex Features )

An Indiana man without a gun licence has been hospitalised after he accidently shot himself in the genitals while walking down the street.

Mark Anthony Jones, 46, was taken to the emergency room at Marion General Hospital for the self-inflicted wound.

Mr Jones later told the city’s police officers he had been taking a morning stroll near a Girl Scout cabin when a Hi-Point 9mm handgun he was carrying in his waistband “began to slip”.

He reached down to readjust the firearm – not protected by a holster – when it went off below his waist.

“The bullet entered just above his penis and exited his scrotum,” said Marion Police Department’s deputy chief Stephen D Dorsey.

The department said officers had visited Mr Jones in hospital to question him about the accidental shooting.

The 46-year-old does not have an Indiana handgun licence, according to police.

The case will now be sent to the Grant County prosecutor’s office to decide whether he will face any charges.

Last month a Texas man accidently shot himself in the stomach while spinning a gun around at his daughter’s 16th birthday party.

In December the dancing FBI agent Chase Bishop – who accidentally shot a man in the leg after doing a backflip at a bar in Colorado – avoided jail time after pleading guilty to third-degree assault.
