Man with 'six knives including meat cleavers Tasered by cops' at health centre after 'trying to attack doctors, patients and nurses'

A man has been detained by police after he 'tried to attack doctors, patients and nurses with six different knives' at a health centre in Stockport.

Officers were called to reports of a man with a knife at the Woodley Health Centre on Hyde Road just after 12.30pm today (Friday).

An eyewitness from inside the building, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the M.E.N that the man had 'six different knives including meat cleavers' on him.

They said he 'tried to attack doctors, patients and nurses' inside the health centre but that 'no-one was stabbed or hurt'.

The eyewitness added that police Tasered the man before detaining him.

"He had six different knives, including meat cleavers", the eyewitness said.

"He was trying to attack doctors, patients and nurses.

"Everyone was safe and luckily no-one was stabbed or hurt.

"Police came in and told him to get down, he didn't so was Tasered.

"They unpacked a bag with three further knives. He had one in his hand and two in his pockets.

"He was held back by staff members by them holding a door."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a 50-year-old man was detained and taken to hospital.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery.

A police car was pictured parked up outside the health centre this afternoon.

Officers were also pictured in the car park after the incident - they appeared to be searching a vehicle.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to reports of a man with a knife at Woodley Health Centre, Hyde Road, Stockport, at about 12.35pm on Friday 12 March 2021.

"Emergency services attended.

"A 50 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and robbery and was taken to hospital.

"Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are ongoing."
