Man with knife arrested after threats to 'blow up house' trigger school evacuation

A man armed with a knife was arrested after reportedly threatening to "blow up a house" leading to the evacuation of a nearby school.

Armed police swooped on Darlington Street in Wallasey at around 11:55am following reports of a concern for safety of a man in a house.

Multiple roads were cordoned off in the nearby area and police are searching the property following the man's arrest.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and affray.

He has been taken into custody where he will be questioned by officers.

An ambulance, fire engines and gas engineers also attended the scene on Friday.

The man was reported to threaten to "blow up a house".

It is believed he forced his way into the property and the incident was domestic-related.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said there were four or five police vehicles at the scene including armed police.

The incident also saw nearby Egremont Primary School on lockdown , with pupils being told to "hide under tables" before children and staff were safely evacuated to Wallasey Town Hall.

Children were reportedly told to 'hide under their desks', before they were evacuated from the school.

It is believed that some pupils have been picked up by their parents from the town hall.

A statement circulated by Egremont Primary School to all parents and carers said:

"There is an incident in the area opposite school and we have been advised by police to evacuate the building.

"We will be making our way to the Town Hall. Please keep an eye on your phone and we will keep you updated in the next hour."
