Man with KN19 TER reg plate fined after woman in 'knitter' shirt enters bus lane

A couple with the number plate KN19 TER were hit with a fine after CCTV picked up a woman walking along a bus lane in a shirt saying something very similar.

David Knight was shocked after receiving the £90 penalty notice from Somerset and Bath Council.

The builder knew the notice was a mistake as he lives 120 miles from the alleged offence and was nowhere near Bath at the time.

He and his wife Paula, from Dorking, Surrey, turned to see the photographic "evidence" for the charge, the Daily Mail reports.

On the page was a CCTV still of a woman strolling along a bus lane while wearing a top with the word "Knitter" across it.

The couple said they've been laughing about the blunder ever since.

Paula - who works as a bookkeeper - contacted Bath and Somerset Council to alert officials to their mistake and to have the fine cancelled.

Last week the local authority agreed to scrap the fine after the mix up.

The mistaken identity surveillance photo was taken in June, but David, 54, only received the penalty notice last month.

Mum-of-two Paul, also 54, said the error made the call handler "burst out laughing" when she told them what had happened.

"The fine had already gone up from £60 to £90 because we hadn’t paid within 30 days,2 she told the Mail.

"Obviously no one had looked at the picture and it had been computer generated.’

David said: "We’ve been laughing about it a lot. There was no way I was going to pay for a woman walking in a bus lane with a funny T-shirt on."

He added that the personalised number plate is a nod to his nickname ‘Knighter’.
