Man with joint behind his ear bit police who stop and searched him

A Hartcliffe man bit and breathed on a policeman in the early part of the first lockdown.

Police attempted to search Harry Hemmings when they spotted he had a cannabis joint stuffed behind his ear.

Bristol Crown Court heard in he midst of a melee which ensued Hemmings bit an officer on the arm.

The 21-year-old, of Gatehouse Avenue, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and possessing cannabis on April 8.

Judge Euan Ambrose handed him a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He told Hemmings: "It must have been painful for the police officer concerned.

"It was quite simply unacceptable behaviour towards the police officer who is doing his job."

Hemmings was handed a two-month curfew in which he must remain at home from 6pm to 6am, seven days a week.

He was also ordered to have up to 20 days' rehabilitation to address cannabis use and anger management.

Ellen McAnaw, prosecuting, said police on duty in Hartcliffe spotted Hemmings with the cannabis spliff behind his ear and went to search him.

Hemmings then bit one of the officers on his forearm - not breaking the skin but leaving a red mark.

Hemmings accepted breathing in the officer's direction, saying he bit him to get him off him.

The court heard that, in May, Hemmings saw the officer and taunted him with the words "You look tasty", which the officer found rude, disrespectful and embarassing.
