Armed police were called to a Wallsend club after a man threatened door staff with a hammer.

Firearms officers were sent to Wallsend Labour Club on Camberley Road just after 10.30pm on Saturday after the man was reported to police.

He had entered the club with the weapon and threatened door staff with it before making off.

Nobody was injured and the search for the man is ongoing.

A large police response was seen at the club on Saturday evening as officers spoke to those who witnessed what had happened.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday we received a report a man had entered Wallsend Labour club with a weapon, believed to be a hammer, and threatened the door staff before making off from the scene.

“Officers attended and spoke to those involved. No one was injured and inquiries to trace the offender are ongoing.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police by visiting their website and using the 'tell us something' page, quoting log number 1337 180720.
