Man with half a beard jailed after firearms officers found him aiming air rifle at car in Blidworth

A 62-year-old man has been locked up after firearms officers had to negotiate with him when he aimed a weapon at a car with passengers inside.

Armed officers descended on Rickets Lane, Blidworth, on the evening of August 12 last year, after Victor Staples threatened a number of drivers with an air rifle.

They found Staples holding the weapon and eventually convinced him to drop the rifle after lengthy negotiations.

Before arriving at the scene he had threatened two separate drivers with the rifle and had also kicked one vehicle, causing damage.

He was arrested at the scene and pleaded guilty to counts of possession with intent to cause fear of violence and one count of criminal damage in court.

Staples, pictured in his mugshot with only half his face covered in a beard, was sentenced to 13 months in prison on Wednesday, March, 24.

Detective Sergeant Jamie Moore, who investigated the case, said: "Clearly a report of someone with a weapon in a public place is treated as high alert.

"Firearms officers were instantly on scene and were able to talk to Staples calmly in order to persuade him to drop his weapon and reach a safe conclusion.

"It would have been terrifying for the members of the public involved and as a force, we are working hard to put a stop to all firearms offences.

"If anyone has any information about people suspected of having a weapon of any form, please call us on 101.

"People can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
