Man 'with coronavirus' threatens to cough on gardai after 'shopping basket attack' in Dublin shop

A man claiming to have coronavirus threatened to cough on gardai after throwing a shopping basket at staff in a Dublin shop.

The terrifying incident happened at a store in the Dame Street area of the city at around 2.45pm on Saturday.

The man in his 30s was detained by gardai shortly after leaving the shop, but refused to give his name to officers.

He allegedly resisted arrest before threatening to cough on the gardai, claiming he had coronavirus.

The man was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station and has been charged in relation to the incident.

He is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice on Monday at 10:30am.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí received reports of a man acting aggressively and threatening staff at a retail premises in the Dame Street area on April 4.

"It is reported the man threw a shopping basket at staff during the incident which occurred at approximately 2:45pm. No injuries were sustained.

"The man, aged in 30s, who had left the premises was located a short time later by Gardaí.

"The man refused to provide his name to Gardaí and resisted arrest while threatening to cough on members stating he had the Coronavirus.

"The man was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station where he has since been charged in relation to this incident.

"He is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Court 3, on 6th April 2020 at 10:30am."
