Man wins over $100,000 after using his change to buy lottery ticket in petrol station

A lucky man has hit the jackpot after he used his change to buy a lottery scratchcard in a petrol station and won over $100,000.

Matthew Spaulding, 41, from West Bloomfield, Michigan, US, received his change back after filling up his car at Mobil petrol station in Ann Arbor when he decided to purchase a scratchcard.

He used the remaining change to purchase a single $5 (£4) Money Match Fast Cash ticket scratchcard.

It turned out to be a stroke of genius after he scratched off the ticket and won a whopping $107,590 (£86,617).

He said in a statement from the Michigan Lottery: "The clerk handed me back $5 (£4) in change.

"I don't usually play Fast Cash, but I saw a Fast Cash sign by their register and told him I'd like to use my change on a Money Match ticket.

"I looked over the ticket while I was walking out of the store and when I saw I'd won the jackpot, I completely lost it.

"I startled some of the customers because I started shouting and celebrating. It was such an awesome feeling!"

After eventually getting over the shock of winning, the 41-year-old checked with lottery officials to confirm he had won.

After being told he was the jackpot winner, Mr Spaulding claimed his prize at the Michigan Lottery headquarters in the city of Lansing on January 24.

However, there won't be any fast cars and big holidays as the lottery winner plans to save his winnings.

Fast Cash games, which Mr Spaulding won on, range from from $2 (£1.60) per play up to $20 (£16) per play.

They are a series of instant-win games that print from terminals at lottery retailers.

The lottery said: "Fast Cash games offer a progressive jackpot that can be won instantly. Every Fast Cash ticket gives players a chance to win all or part of the progressive jackpot.

"All of the Fast Cash games feed into one jackpot, which grows with every ticket purchased.

"The current jackpot amount prints on each ticket, so players always know the amount of the jackpot up for grabs.

"The jackpot may be won at any time. As soon as the jackpot is hit, a new one starts to grow."
