Man wins $200,000 after 'getting urge' to buy scratchcard on his way home from work

A man has won $200,000 (£178,000) after buying a scratchcard on a whim.

Andrew Raymond Stefanick, 48, purchased the winning card after leaving his work.

The lucky winner, from Salisbury, North Carolina, said "When I realised how much, I couldn't believe it. I walked out to the car in a state of shock and called my parents."

The neurologist has decided to share his winnings with each of his parents getting around $47,000 (£41,800) each after taxes.

Stefanick said: "I just felt an urge to buy a scratch-off. I saw there was a promotion for 5X the points on $5 scratch-offs so I got that one."

Although he bought the ticket he was always going to share with his parents.

He added: "I bought the ticket but we all play together. Any major amount we split three ways."

In a statement, North Carolina Lottery said: "Andrew Raymond Stefanick of Salisbury got off work at the hospital, decided to buy a $5 lottery ticket, and uncovered a $200,000 prize waiting for him."

It continued: "Stefanick said he likes playing the lottery with his parents, Andrew Stefanick and Dunyia Stefanick of China Grove."

The statement went on: "The Stefanick family stopped by lottery headquarters Monday to claim their prize. Andrew Raymond Stefanick received $66,680 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $47,350.

"His parents each received $66,660 and took home $47,336 after taxes.

"Andrew Raymond Stefanick said he will use his winnings to do some home repairs.

"The Hot 5's game debuted in July with five top prizes of $200,000. Two $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed."

Although the lottery is a game of chance some people believe they can rig the system.

A school bus driver won $50,000 (£45,000) in the lottery, claiming he studied the winning numbers for years and worked out which ones to play.

The 77-year-old told the lottery he had noticed which numbers tended to come up the most often and would pick them.

Over the years, he won "lots and lots of small and not-so-small wins, but nothing quite like this!"

The Maryland State Lottery said: "He's been playing the same Bonus Match 5 numbers for years, a Baltimore man told Lottery officials.

"And for years, he continued, those numbers have paid off."

They added that the bus driver had an excellent memory for numbers, saying: "The 77-year-old school bus driver put his lucky combination together based on game results he remembers going back 20 years."
