A man arrived at the Royal with a baseball bat in dramatic scenes at the hospital last night.

Police were called to the site at 8.10pm following reports of a bat-wielding man on the premises.

The incident led to a large police presence at the Royal as officers dealt with the situation.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

A second man was also detained in connection with the same incident, which Merseyside Police is treating as "domestic" related.

The 28-year-old, who is from Walton , was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications and racially/religiously aggravated harassment.

Both men were taken in custody for questioning.
