Man who yells 'Stop Brexit' at MPs outside Parliament coming to Leeds for protest

An anti-Brexit protester known for crying "Stop Brexit" at MPs outside the Houses of Parliament is coming to Leeds this week.

Steve Bray will join Leeds for Europe's Brexit Isn't Working protest in Leeds city centre this week.

Steve, known for berating politicians outside Westminster in his trademark yellow and blue top hat, will join protesters from Leeds, North Yorkshire and Sheffield at the demonstration, marking five years since the controversial EU referendum result.

Thursday's event at 4pm, outside Leeds Art Gallery on the Headrow, is hoped to be one of several happening nationally this week.

Richard Wilson, chair of Leeds for Europe, branded Brexit a 'disaster' and said even those who voted Leave in 2016 had a right to be angry.

He said he was disappointed when the government extended lockdown restrictions but said the protest would be socially distanced with people wearing masks where appropriate.

Richard added: “But that doesn’t mean we have to be silent on the damage Brexit is doing to our country or to stop demanding that our damaged relations with our European allies and neighbours are repaired.

“Whichever way you look at it, Brexit isn’t working. Anyone who agrees with us is welcome to join us on Thursday. Even those who may have voted Leave in 2016 have as much reason as anyone to be angry. This disaster is nothing like what the likes of Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings were promising them five years ago.”

Other cities also due to mount demonstrations between June 23-27 include London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham.
