Man who was found in the toilet of a strangers home is jailed for eight months

A disabled man woke up to find a stranger with a knife in the bathroom of his Motherwell home.

Dennis Speedie, who was sitting on the toilet, had earlier helped himself to food in the kitchen.

The serial offender was jailed for 10 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour which placed the man in a state of fear and alarm at the flat in Woodburn Street on September 12.

Speedie, 46, who was described as a prisoner, also admitted stealing the man’s phone and committing the offences while on bail.

Jennifer McLaren, prosecuting, said the householder was partially paralysed after suffering two strokes.

He left his door unlocked overnight to let his carer in, but was wakened at 5am by banging.

The man got out of bed to investigate and found items of food opened and lying on the kitchen counter.

Ms McLaren told the court: “He then heard a bang from the bathroom and found the accused, heavily intoxicated, sitting on the toilet with a large knife on the floor beside him.

“He couldn’t find his phone so pressed his panic button and asked his carers to call the police.”

Officers arrived to find Speedie still sitting on the toilet. The man’s phone was in his trouser pocket.

Defence agent Elspeth Forrest said Speedie was “thoroughly ashamed” especially as he has elderly parents.

She said: “There has been drugs misuse throughout his adult life. He had taken valium and remembers trying to get home and being disorientated.

“He doesn’t recall going into this flat. He was looking for food and meant no harm to the occupier, but understands it was a terrifying episode for him.”

Speedie admitted around 40 previous convictions for crimes of dishonesty.

He was jailed for eight months in April for stealing a wallet and was on early release from prison when the latest offences were committed.

Sheriff Thomas Millar told Speedie he would have been jailed for 15 months this time had it not been for his guilty pleas.
