Man who was cleared over horrific killing became 'entirely fixated' with pathologist

A former murder accused, who was acquitted, became "entirely fixated" with a Home Office pathologist who gave evidence in the trial 18 years ago, and stalked him, a judge found. After three days of evidence at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, Shane Hudson was found guilty of stalking pathologist Professor Guy Rutty MBE, who he had never even met.

His disturbing behaviour came after his release from prison for another offence. Hudson, who has three aliases, tried to contact the pathologist via his personal assistant, through call operators at the Royal Leicester Infirmary and by email.

The professor gave evidence in 2005 in the case involving some of Hudson's family members who were found guilty of the horrific murder of Shane Hudson's sister-in-law Rachel Hudson.

Nottingham Crown Court had heard Rachel, a young mum, was tortured, insulted and humiliated by other family members after she moved in with them in Stockhill, Nottingham, in November 2002. Her battered body was found face down in mud in a rolled-up carpet near a lake at Newstead Abbey just 17 months after her wedding. She had suffered more than 60 injuries.

While Shane Hudson was acquitted of murder, he waged his stalking campaign in April this year against the highly experienced pathologist, who has given evidence in hundreds of murder trials across the Midlands, and is the professor of forensic pathology at the University of Leicester.

District Judge Grace Leong found that Professor Rutty was caused serious alarm and distress by Hudson's course of conduct, and that Hudson had told lies to get to his target, using different aliases and pretending to a be a police officer.

She said: "He became entirely fixated with the professor. I'm of the view that the defendant was proceeding with his campaign against Professor Rutty in an obsessive way". Hudson, 36, of Bestwood Road, Bulwell, will be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on August 1.
