Man who traced woman to Bristol and assaulted her is banned from the city

A 25-year-old man from Sudan who followed a woman to Bristol and assaulted her has been jailed. Bristol Crown Court heard Abdelbaset Yaakoub reached Germany when he messaged the victim on Facebook, telling her: "I know you are in France, I am in Germany, where do you live, I will find you, don’t come to Europe and look for white men.”.

After coming to the UK in September 2021 Yaakoub came to Bristol in the December and made enquiries about the woman - to no avail. He also tried to track her down via City of Bristol College - before eventually finding her and subjecting her to a nasty assault.

Yaakoub, 25, whose address was given as Liskeard Close in Runcorn, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Judge Mark Horton jailed him for 18 months and handed him a restraining order banning him from Bristol.

The court heard that in TikTok messages Yaakoub made threats concerning the woman acting in a "Western manner" and his ownership of her as "his girl". On May 27 this year Yaakoub approached the victim, who was with her friend, outside The Three Tuns pub near to the City of Bristol College.

Recognising Yaakoub from him pursuing her on social media she filmed him. He then assaulted her, causing her a mark to the left side of her neck, swelling and reddening to her forehead and grazes both knees.

Yaakoub's defence team said their client's case was that his relationship with the victim is one from their youth. He denies stalking her and he claims his application for asylum in the UK was made for genuine reasons and not for the purpose of pursuing the victim.
