Man who took woman hostage at knifepoint found dead in prison

A prisoner at HMP Risley in Warrington died in custody today, it was confirmed.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances regarding the death of Bradley Charnley, 23, at the Warrington jail.

The Barrow man was jailed in October 2018 at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to threatening to kill a woman.

She was held captive in a room at the Imperial Hotel in Cornwallis Street, Barrow, by Bradley Charnley, who threatened to kill her if officers entered.

The officers had attended the hotel to arrest a man on suspicion of assault in May 2018.

Confronted by officers, he grabbed his partner, put a knife to her throat and retreated to a bathroom, telling officers he would kill the woman if they entered.

The hostage rescue team managed to bring the woman to safety when she and the man became involved in a physical confrontation and officers took the decision to act and force entry to the room.

Officers entered with shields and tasers and forced the man away from the hostage, at which point he turned the knife on himself.

The man caused a puncture wound to his own neck before officers could get the knife away from him.

The team of police officers who managed to free the woman from a knife-point hostage situation later received an award for their bravery.

Bradley Charnley received a sentence of 24 months for threatening to kill Chloe Wilson, and was also given a consecutive sentence of 20 months for affray.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMP Risley prisoner Bradley Charnley died in custody on 13 August and our condolences are with his family and friends.

"The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed."
