Man who throttled his partner and refused to leave flat is jailed

A man who throttled his partner has been jailed for 15 months.

John MacDonald, from Paisley, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

The 34-year-old admitted assaulting the woman at a flat in Carfin Street, New Stevenston, on July 18 last year.

The court heard MacDonald put his hands around her neck, restricted her breathing and caused her to fall.

He also admitted shouting abuse and refusing to leave the flat.

MacDonald was also accused of possessing cannabis and trying to pervert the course of justice by asking police to destroy the drugs and not to report his possession of them.

But his not guilty pleas to those charges were accepted.

MacDonald admitted previous convictions.

As well as jailing him, Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen imposed a non-harassment order that bans MacDonald from any contact with the victim for two years.
