Man who teaches computing without using any computers in Ghana becomes online sensation

A man who teaches computing without using any computers in Ghana has become an online sensation.

Images of Owura Kwadwo, a nickname for the man who has been identified as Richard Appiah Akoto, is seen using a blackboard with a diagram of Microsoft Word drawn upon it.

He uses the detailed diagram to teach his class due to a lack of equipment.

“Teaching of ICT in Ghana’s school is very funny. ICT on the board,” Mr Akoto said on Facebook.

“I love my students so have to do what will make them understand what I am teaching,” he added.

Mr Akoto also added that he draws the image every time he enters the classroom and has to teach.

“This is not my first time [of drawing] it. I have been doing it anytime I am in the classroom,” Mr Akoto told Quartz.

“I like posting pictures on Facebook so I just felt like [sharing it]. I didn’t know it would get the attention of people like that,” he said.

The images and video were shared thousands of times on social media and led to Microsoft promising to spend him new computer equipment.

“Supporting teachers to enable digital transformation in education is at the core of what we do,” Microsoft said.

We will equip Owura Kwadwo with a device from one of our partners, and access to our MCE program & free professional development resources.”
